Council Tax refund scam letters
Date Added: 16/09/2020
Act with caution if you receive a suspicious letter
We are warning residents to act with caution if they receive a letter claiming to offer a discount or refund on their council tax.
We have been made aware of a new type of scam letter being received by residents in other local authorities. The letter is designed to look like it has been sent by the local council and instructs the resident to visit a specific website and enter their details, to see if they are eligible for paying no council tax for up to a year, depending on their circumstances, or qualify for a refund for council tax they have already paid.
The letter gives a website address that may look official, but is in fact a ‘copycat’ website, designed to harvest personal information and bank details from residents.
If you receive a letter like this, please do not visit the website stated and do not enter your details.
If you’re unsure whether a letter regarding council tax is genuine or not, please contact the council directly.
Please help protect others from falling victim to this type of scam, by letting your family, friends and neighbours know about this alert.
