National highways: An update on A1 Biggleswade to Sandy
Date Added: 16/06/2023
Further to my previous letter I am writing to update you on the work we’re carrying out on the A1 between around Sandy, between the Black Cat roundabout and Biggleswade North. This work includes safety barrier replacement, resurfacing, road marking and drainage renewal which will ensure the A1 remains in a safe and serviceable condition. We expect to complete this scheme by Friday 21 July.
We have faced a number of unexpected challenges to delivering this work and thank you for your patience while we continue to progress on this scheme. Please continue to bear with us in these closing stages as we have faced a number of interferences that have delayed our progress, and any continued disruptions could only delay our work further.
Our work is being carried out between 9pm and 5am on weeknights only, weather conditions permitting.
Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, we will need to close parts of the A1 between the Black Cat Roundabout and Biggleswade North roundabout, one direction at a time, and divert traffic as detailed below:
• We will be closing the A1 northbound between Biggleswade North and Sandy until Friday 23 June, with the central lane (lane two) closed southbound while we are working
• We will be closing the A1 southbound between Sandy and Biggleswade North from Monday 26 June until Friday 7 July, with lane two closed northbound while we are working
• We will be closing the A1 northbound between Sandy and the Black Cat roundabout from Monday 10 July to Friday 21 July, with lane two closed southbound while we are working

A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet improvement scheme
National Highways will be upgrading the route between the A1 Black Cat roundabout in Bedfordshire and Caxton Gibbet roundabout in Cambridgeshire with a new 10-mile dual carriageway and a number of junction improvements.
Unfortunately, the start of construction was delayed due to a legal challenge, but this is now over. We are keen to get started as soon as possible, so you will see us continue preparatory works as we get ready for full construction. We plan to move into full construction by the end of the year and expect the road to open in 2027. Please visit www.nationalhighways.co.uk/a428 for more information on this.
