Central Bedfordshire Council: Bedford Creative Arts Newsletter - 2022
Date Added: 07/09/2022
Hello there...
August - the holiday season - has given us a little chance to catch our breath after a very busy delivery period. So, what have we lined up next? We have some very exciting projects on their way. Read on to find out more!
Ghost Signs are go!
The first of our four Ghost Signs is now in place! If you are passing King’s Oak Primary School on Oak Road, Bedford, then look up and see The Story of Flight.
Artist, Emmylou Shine worked with King’s Oak Primary School’s year 5 students. As the children were painting the mural they were also learning about the history of flight as part of the school curriculum.
Ghost Signs are old hand-painted advertising signs that were painted onto a building and tended to stay for an extended period of time.
Three more Ghost Signs will be appearing around Bedford and all will depict historic and technical developments from Bedford’s past.?The artwork will have a modern twist as QR codes will be added to allow passers-by to interact with the work.
So, keep your eyes peeled for the next one. When you spot a Ghost Sign, please photograph it and share it with us using #GhostSignsBedford.

Trustee Recruitment – two vacancies available
Bedford Creative Arts is seeking two enthusiastic people to join its Board of trustees from Autumn 2022.
Our trustees volunteer their time a few hours each month to help guide the strategic direction of the charity and champion our work. We are particularly excited to hear from people who have skills or experience in either leadership, the arts (in any artform) or working with communities.
We are keen to hear from people from a diverse range of backgrounds and especially those which are current under-represented on our board which includes people from UK minority ethnic backgrounds and those with a disability.
"Being a trustee has provided me with governance experience as part of a friendly team of people dedicated to using the arts as a tool for social change. I've learnt new skills I might not otherwise have gained from my employment all whilst volunteering my time for an exciting and valuable local charity." Sam Matthews, Vice-Chair of Trustees.

CanArt sustainability project
Did you know that aluminium is infinitely recyclable, and it takes up to 95% less energy to recycle it than to produce primary aluminium? That is why Ball Corporation encourages using aluminium cans for drinking water, rather than plastic bottles.
To celebrate the positive sustainability aspects of aluminium, Ball Corporation has commissioned BCA to help them produce a piece of artwork which will be unveiled during Great Big Green Week 24th September – 2nd October.
BCA is working with artist Larry Jackaman, who is cutting leaf shapes out of the aluminium cans and then, with some help from the public, embossing them with designs from nature. They show swans, leaves, birds and even the river Ouse.
We’ll show you the finished project soon but in the meantime if you took part in Larry's workshop at the Bedford River Festival please get in touch and let us know. Contact us on: [email protected].
