Missing cervical screenings could put your life in danger

Date Added: 20/06/2022

A cervical screening (also known as a smear test) is a potentially lifesaving test. But there are many who miss their appointment - with a worrying one in three people not taking up their invite.

The test can be difficult for some, worrying and uncomfortable for others. But it’s so important you have yours when it’s due. It could save your life.

Worried about your smear test?
Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust has pulled together some useful tips to help ease your worries and concerns:

Talk to your nurse or doctor
You might find it embarrassing but talking about your worries to a nurse or doctor can help. They can give you tips and advice and the right support.

Ask for the first appointment of the day
Waiting rooms can make some feel uncomfortable. If you book the first appointment of the day you will have less time to wait and it’s usually a little quieter.

Ask for a nurse of a particular gender
You may feel more comfortable knowing the gender of the person who will be doing your screening.  Check with your GP if you can request a nurse or doctor of a particular gender to help you feel at ease.

Speculums come in different sizes
Did you know that the speculums (the equipment used during your test) come in different sizes? If you find the test uncomfortable, ask if you can try another size.

Try a different position
Lying on your back may be tricky, ask your nurse about the left lateral position, this may be more comfortable for you.
