Central Bedfordshire Council: Men's Health Awareness Month

Date Added: 07/11/2022

Helping men and boys

November is Men's Health Awareness Month, including International Men's Day on November 19. Together they aim to change the face of men's health, to encourage men to think about their health and wellbeing, both physical and mental, and to highlight positive role models and inspirational stories. Here are some of our favourite books that offer valuable advice for living better:

• The Comfort Book by Matt Haig is a collection of consolations learned in hard times and suggestions for making the bad days better. Drawing on maxims, memoir and the inspirational lives of others, these meditations offer new ways of seeing ourselves and the world

• Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman introduces readers to tools for constructing a meaningful life by embracing rather than denying their limitations

• In Mind Fuel Bear Grylls, with emotional health advocate Will Van Der Hart, offers practical insights to help you to increase your resilience, combat stress and live life with confidence

• In Happy Mind, Happy Life Dr Rangan Chatterjee shares cutting-edge insights into the science of happiness and reveals 10 simple ways to put you back in control of your health and mental wellbeing

• Living Better is Alastair Campbell's honest, moving and life affirming account of his lifelong struggle with depression
International Men’s Day celebrates worldwide the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities, and highlights positive role models. Here are some inspirational stories about overcoming challenges and what it means to be a man:

International Men’s Day celebrates worldwide the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities, and highlights positive role models. Here are some inspirational stories about overcoming challenges and what it means to be a man:

• Full of exciting adventures and practical guidance, Inspire by Ben Fogle is about overcoming obstacles, surpassing your expectations and inspiring your journey of adventure

• In Step by Step Simon Reeve gives the full story behind some of his favourite expeditions and traces his own personal journey back to leaving school without qualifications, teetering on a bridge, and then overcoming his challenges by climbing to a 'Lost Valley' and changing his life

• In Making It Jay Blades reflects on strength, weakness and what it means to be a man. He questions the boundaries society places on male vulnerability and how letting himself be nurtured helped him flourish into the person he is today

• Riding Out is the remarkable and inspirational true story of how Simon Parker battled grief and anxiety, one pedal stroke at a time, on a 3,500-mile adventure around Britain

• The Madness of Grief by Reverend Richard Coles is a moving and beautifully written account of losing his partner of 12 years and coping with the grief of his death
