Act with caution if you receive a suspicious telephone call
The Trading Standards team are urging residents to act with caution if they receive an unsolicited call about the loft insulation in their home.
We have been made aware of residents who have received a telephone call, whereby the caller claims that loft insulation the resident has previously had installed in their home may not be efficient. The caller then offers to arrange for a ‘representative’ to visit their home to carry out an inspection.
One elderly resident who has recently contacted us did agree to such a visit.
Following an inspection, the ‘representative’ claimed that due to the inefficient loft insulation that had been laid by a previous business, the loft space now had a high moisture level and was covered in mould growth and if action was not taken soon, there was a risk that the rafters could collapse from damp.
The 'representative' then offered to spray the loft to make the insulation more efficient and prevent any further damage.
The concerned resident agreed for the ‘representative’ to return the following day to carry out the work – this took approximately one hour to complete and left the resident with a bill for over £5000, for work that was most likely not required and unnecessary.
If you or anyone you know receives this type of telephone call, do not feel pressured into making a quick decision and always take a moment to consider whether any claims being made are genuine. If you are concerned about what you have been told, take time to shop around by contacting local reputable businesses and seek their guidance.
