Works update and traffic management plans
Date Added: 30/09/2022
Work on the new transport interchange next to Biggleswade railway station is progressing well as we look to make it easier for people to use public transport, continue to promote sustainable travel and put the infrastructure in place to support growth in the town.
As part of the continued safe construction of the scheme, we need to manage traffic in the area.
We have introduced narrow road lanes and parking restrictions on Station Road to the south of the station forecourt area and we have coned off an area at the southern end of the station forecourt for essential drainage works and to create the kerb line of the new central pedestrian concourse.
The latest traffic management plans
As work progresses through the project’s construction phases, the traffic management measures will need to change. The next two phases are highlighted below.
From Tuesday 4 October to Thursday 20 October:
• The Palace Street junction with Saffron Road will be closed. Access for Palace Street residents will be via Bonds Lane only.
• There will be three-way traffic lights in place at the junction of Station Road and Saffron Road.
• This will enable us to create the new road layout. Following this closure, the traffic lights will be removed, and Palace Street will reopen as a right turn only at its junction with Saffron Road. This will be part of the new permanent road layout close to the railway station.
From Friday 28 October to Wednesday 23 November:
• Saffron Road will be closed at its junction with Station Road with a diversion in place via Station Road, Bonds Lane and Foundry Lane.
• This will see us complete junction works south of Saffron Road including new tactile paving.
We will provide updates on further traffic management plans before these are put in place.
We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We are doing our utmost to keep any disruption to a minimum while the construction of this important scheme takes place.
