Recreation Grounds & Public Open Spaces

The Council owns and maintais two principal recreation grounds in Sandy:

  • Bedford Road Recreation Ground, Bedford Road, Sandy, SG19 1EY
  • Sunderland Road Recreation Ground, Sunderland Road, SG19 1RQ

Bedford Road Recreation Ground includes children’s play facilities for a range of age groups, a youth shelter, open space and a football pitch which is leased to Sandy Football Club as is the Football Pavilion on this site.

Sunderland Road Recreation Ground includes children’s play facilities, open space, senior, junior and mini football pitches, cricket pitch, car parking, a youth shelter and some skate board equipment (which is owned by Sandy Skateboard Association).   The football pitches are allocated to local clubs on a seasonal basis but occasional games may be permitted. The cricket square is leased to Sandy Cricket Club but is available for public use.

The Town Council also owns the Bowling Green on Sunderland Road Recreation Ground, Sandy. Although it is on a long-term lease to Sandy Town Bowling Club it is available for public use. Please contact the Bowling Club if you'd like to use the facilities.

Sandy Town Council owns Beeston Common which is ancient common land and therefore a registered village green. The Beeston Green Management Plan can be found here.  In addition the Town Council has adopted several parcels of public open space which it maintains on behalf of the community, eg  the public open space in the Fallowfield development.

These areas of public open space are maintained either directly by Sandy Town Council staff or by our contractors.

Keeping the Recreation Grounds tidy

At least once a week, litter will be picked up and litter bins emptied.

To report any problems please contact the Council on 01767 681491.

Ball Game Complaints

Football and other ball games in themselves are not anti-social behaviour or illegal which makes "No ball games" signs unenforceable. Additionally, it is not illegal to play football on a grassed verge or open space. It is reasonable to expect a certain level of noise from children/young people while playing. However, playing ball games could result in anti-social behaviour when there is deliberate kicking of the ball against a wall, property (including plants), vehicle or pedestrians, excessive noise or swearing, trespassing on private property or playing after darkness or beyond 11pm. In case of antisocial behaviour please report to the police on 101.
