Weekly figures
COVID-19 cases continue to fall but remain high
The number of new COVID-19 cases in Central Bedfordshire (in the week ending 7 February) dropped to 480. This is a decrease of 224 cases from the previous week. The number of weekly positive cases per 100,000 population is now 166.
Whilst the reducing number of new cases is positive news, the number of deaths being reported each week continues to be high. Very sadly, the report shows that 38 residents have died in the latest reporting week.
The latest data from our neighbouring areas also show a similar trend of reducing cases but the deaths remain high.
Milton Keynes – 487 new cases (180 cases per 100,000) and 41 deaths
Luton – 675 new cases (316 cases per 100,000) and 35 deaths
Bedford – 499 new cases (288 cases per 100,000) and 27 deaths
The reducing number of cases is evidence that lockdown and reducing our social contact is working but we need to hang in there and keep sticking to the rules until the deaths rates also fall.
Over 13million people across the UK have now been vaccinated which gives us hope that we will soon be able to start returning to some normality. If you have been vaccinated, please remember to continue to follow the rules as it is not yet clear if those who have been vaccinated can still pass on the virus even if the vaccination protects them from being seriously ill.
So, we all need to hang on in there, continue to stay at home and remember: Hands. Face. Space when we do go out.
