Tree planting opportunities

Date Added: 09/03/2022

The Sustainability Team have been planning tree giveaway pilots as part of the Queen's Green Canopy celebrations, encouraging people to plant a tree for the Jubilee!

Free tree giveaway events this month:
• Bedford Square (Houghton Regis) from 10am on Saturday 12th March
• Leighton Linslade Market from 9am on Tuesday 15th March
• Biggleswade Market from 8am on Saturday 19th March

Trees are available on a first come first serve basis and officers will be available to explain to people how to plant and take care of the tree. Residents will just need to fill out a tree adoption form to collect their free tree!

Please note, these events are a pilot, and we will be rolling out more tree giveaways across Central Bedfordshire in the Autumn, in line with the tree planting season.

Queen’s Green Canopy initiative:
#PlantATreeForTheJubilee!

We are supporting the Queen’s Green Canopy, a national initiative created to mark her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee. Tree planting will take place up until the end of March and commence again in November, through to the end of the Jubilee year.

We ask that people plot their tree or hedge projects on the Queen's Green Canopy website.

Tree planting grant:
Our tree planting grant is available for community groups, schools and organisations and provides funding (or match funding) to increase tree, shrub and hedge planting across our area. Projects can vary in size from five trees up to larger areas of woodland.

From the 2020/21 and 2021/22 planting seasons, the scheme has supported nearly 18,000 new trees and shrubs and over 3km of hedgerow.

Guidance and support is available for each project, with a dedicated tree officer on hand to help get the most out of your planting project.
