The Council Welcomes the New Mayor & Deputy Mayor

Date Added: 17/05/2021

Sandy Town Council held its Annual Meeting on Thursday 6th May 2021. At the meeting, Councillor Martin Pettitt was elected to serve as Mayor of Sandy Town Council for the coming year, and Councillor Joanna Hewitt was elected to serve as Deputy Mayor.

Accepting his new role, Councillor Pettitt pledged to, ‘continue to work hard for the benefit of Sandy and for all the individuals, families and groups which make up our community and who elected [the Council] to represent them.’

Councillor Pettitt raised the importance of some ‘grass roots matters’ for which the Council continues to work and push the relevant authorities to resolve. These included local leisure provision, the future of the Sandye Place Academy site, the revitalisation of the Town Centre, the Neighbourhood Plan, the completion of the Beeston Allotment and Community Orchard, and identifying other, new allotment land. He stressed that these matters have a great day to day impact on large sections of our community.

Councillor Pettit took the opportunity to thank Councillor Michael Scott, the outgoing Mayor, and his wife Lynda, for their service to the town and the Council during the past three years; sentiments which were echoed by all the other Council Members. He said, 'I think we should be especially grateful to Cllr Scott for agreeing to remain in the role of Mayor for the past unprecedented year,' after the 2020 Annual Council Meeting had to be postponed in the midst of the first wave of the pandemic.

The new Mayor also stated his chosen beneficiaries for the Mayor’s Charity Fund in 2021-2. Any money raised at mayoral events during the coming year will be shared between The Prostate Project and The Eve Appeal.
