Sandy Commemorates Remembrance Day
Date Added: 11/11/2024
On Sunday 10th November 2024, hundreds lined the streets for the annual Remembrance Day Parade. The parade mustered at Swan Lane and was led by Samantha Wenn and her dog, Billy, who represented the animals who served beside the soldiers during the war. Following them were the 1st Sandy Scout & Guide Reunion Band, Standard Bearers led by The Royal British Legion (RBL), the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Colonel Tony Abrahams TD and aides, the Mayor of Sandy, Cllr Joanna Hewitt, the Member of Parliament for North East Bedfordshire, Richard Fuller MP, Robert Pashby, Central Bedfordshire Council Ward Councillor for Sandy along with several representatives from various schools and community groups within Sandy as well as members of the public. At the War Memorial on Bedford Road, the Act of Remembrance was observed and was followed by the laying of wreaths.
The parade then proceeded along Bedford Road with the dignitaries taking the salute at Fayne’s Corner. The parade eventually moved into St Swithun’s Church for the Service of Remembrance. Rev Jodie Brown led the service which included readings by Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Colonel Tony Abrahams TD and the Mayor of Sandy and prayers by the President and Chairman of the RBL Sandy and District Branch and representatives of selected community groups in Sandy. To end the service, the Standard Bearers led the procession out from the Church to the Churchyard where the parade was dismissed.
Sandy Town Council and the Royal British Legion Sandy and District Branch would like to thank everyone who joined in with these events, to remember and honour the sacrifices of the fallen. We are grateful to Roadway Traffic Management for handling this year’s road closure safely and smoothly. The parade drew an incredible turnout and we appreciate everyone who joined us to commemorate the day.
Thank you to the brilliant photographers who assisted in capturing the event. Photos from the day can be accessed online here: https://www.sandyphotoclub.uk/?p=20349
There will also be a display of the images at the Sandy Library for the rest of November.
