Returning to school: COVID-secure measures on school transport

Date Added: 08/03/2021

School transport will resume from 8 March
Schools in Central Bedfordshire will begin to return from Monday (8 March), and therefore school transport will resume, with normal routes and timetables. Any additional vehicles or extra journeys that were running in the autumn term to ensure sufficient capacity will continue to run when the schools re-open on Monday.

We are continuing to take measures to ensure school transport is COVID-secure, although where possible we’re advising that pupils walk or cycle to school, or travel in a car.

Wearing face coverings
Unless your child is exempt, we strongly recommend they wear a face covering on public transport and busses.

Children under the age of 11, in accordance with Government guidelines, do not need to wear a face mask. More information about face coverings is available on the Government’s website.

Working with our transport providers
We’re working closely with our transport providers, who continue to adhere to Government guidelines ensuring that they clean and sanitise vehicles regularly. Where possible, windows and roof lights should be opened to allow ventilation.

Pupils should board the bus at the front and fill seats from the back first. They should leave the bus from the front (last on, first off).

We are also strongly encouraging our transport providers to make use of Central Bedfordshire’s rapid testing sites which are available to staff in public facing roles to help reduce the spread of covid symptoms.

Find your school transport timetable
Check your school’s transport timetable by searching for your school on our website. You’ll then be able to go to the school information page, and view bus and taxi timetables.

We can reimburse you for car mileage
If your child is eligible for home to school transport assistance and normally travels on a school bus, coach or taxis, but you are planning to drive them to and from school instead, we can refund you for the mileage you use.

Reimbursements are calculated on the distance between your home and your child’s school at a rate of 36p per mile for four journeys a day (i.e. a return journey in the morning and the afternoon).
