Reading Well for children and young people

Books can help you feel better

Children's Mental Health Week, which aims to shine a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health, is taking place on 7-13 February 2022. 1 in 6 children and young people have a diagnosable mental health problem, and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement. The theme this year is Growing Together, which is about growing emotionally and finding ways to help each other grow.

The theme this year is Growing Together, which is about growing emotionally and finding ways to help each other grow.

You can find books to support mental wellbeing for children and young people in our libraries, as part of our Reading Well collections. Reading Well for children provides quality-assured information, stories and advice to support children’s mental health and wellbeing, aimed at children aged 7-11. The books have been chosen and recommended by leading health professionals and co-produced with children and families.

We also have Reading Well for young people, for those aged 13-18. Reading Well for young people recommends expert endorsed books about mental health, providing advice and information about issues like anxiety, stress and OCD, and difficult experiences like bullying and exams. The books have all been recommended by young people and health professionals.

You can find the Reading Well collections for children and young people in our larger libraries, or find and request them through our library catalogue, Arena. This last selection of titles are also available to download through Libby our ebook platform. There is currently no charge for requesting books. Not a member? You can join online here.
