Improving sports facilities in Sandy
Date Added: 27/05/2021
A message from Cllr Tracey Stock
I am writing to inform you of a proposal to change how leisure services are provided in Sandy, which we believe will improve the leisure offer to the community.
As you know, some leisure facilities at Sandy Secondary School have been available for community use. As a result of our investment in transforming Sandy Secondary School, the leisure health and fitness suite, and the two spaces for exercise classes are required for education use from September 2023, so we have been looking to find alternative options for the community to use.
The four court sports hall, squash courts and access to indoor sports will be made available to the public by Sandy Secondary School.
We are proposing, in partnership with Sandy Town Council, to extend the Jenkins Pavilion at Sunderland Road Recreation Ground to re-provide the health and fitness suite and group exercise space to increase the provision and the quality of facilities.
The proposed extension would provide:
-
Two full size, purpose-built exercise studios
-
Larger gym (approx. 55 stations)
-
A flexible studio space for spin bikes and other activities
-
Reception, office, accessible toilets and lift
-

The existing range of outdoor sports facilities delivered in the area around Sandy Secondary School and the adjacent Sunderland Road Recreation Ground (grass football and cricket pitches, floodlit all-weather pitch and athletics track), the extension to the Jenkins Pavilion and an artificial pitch for the SEND football academy at Sandy Secondary School that will be available for community use mean we can provide an enhanced leisure offer in Sandy.
The proposals for the extension of the Jenkins Pavilion will be considered by the Council’s Executive on 8 June. If they agree the recommendations, we will consult on the proposals for six weeks. We will let you know how you can have your say once the consultation is open.
Kind regards
Cllr Tracey Stock
Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Communities
