If you’re in an abusive relationship, support is available over the Christmas period

Date Added: 23/12/2020

For people in an abusive relationship, Christmas can feel daunting.

We have already spent much of our year facing uncertainty which has caused drastic changes to our day-to-day lives.
This year the National Domestic Abuse Helpline reported that demand had spiked significantly during lockdown. And now, with Christmas approaching and a tier system in place bringing its own restrictions, we’re still unable to celebrate the way we normally would. This can create additional pressures for households, but there is support available if you need it.

If you need help
If you want to reach out, even on Christmas Day, help is available. You can call the National Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247.

Visit the Bedfordshire Domestic Abuse Partnership website for more information about local and national support for all affected by domestic abuse, including men, children and young people, older people and people from the LGBT+ community.

If you’re in immediate danger, always dial 999.

If you’re worried about someone else

If you suspect domestic abuse and don't want to reveal your identity, talk to CrimeStoppers by calling 0800 555 111. Or visit the CrimeStoppers domestic abuse webpage where you can anonymously complete an online form.

If you’re worried about a child, then tell us. Wherever you are in Bedfordshire, you can report a safeguarding concern outside of normal hours on 0300 300 8123.

Find out more on our podcast

Our domestic abuse team has launched a new podcast called Relationships Shouldn’t Hurt. Each month, members of the team will discuss a different aspect of domestic abuse and offer information about where people can access support. The first episode features information about what domestic abuse is, and an extra episode released last week outlines what kind of support is available over the festive period.

Follow and subscribe to the podcast using the button below, or search Relationships Shouldn’t Hurt on Spotify.
