Council Tax refund telephone scam
Date Added: 20/04/2021
Act with caution if you receive a suspicious telephone scam
The Trading Standards team are advising residents to act with caution if they receive an unexpected telephone call from someone claiming that you are entitled to a Council Tax refund.
We’ve seen an increase in reports from residents who have received such a call recently. The callers may claim your property is in the wrong Council Tax Band and that you have been paying too much or that your Council Tax Band has been downgraded and you are now entitled to a refund.
These callers may claim to be from, or representing, the Council. They may then ask you for your bank account details so that they can process the refund, but in reality you may find money leaving your account instead!
If you do receive such a call our advice is to hang up and do not provide any bank account details!
Please help protect others, by letting your family, friends and neighbours know about this alert.
