Central Bedfordshire Council: Is your shopping bag full of rubbish?
Date Added: 30/08/2021
It's estimated that the UK wastes approximately 10 million tonnes of food a year!
On average that is one in every five bags of shopping that go to waste, for every household. That’s a lot of potential extra cash being thrown away.
There are several ways you can reduce this waste and at the same time save yourself money:
• Think Cool
A lot of food we buy can be frozen up to its use-by date, yet only a third of us follow on-packet information about freezing food. Freezing food not only reduces waste it can also save you time (for example, freezing precooked food for future meals).
• Portion Control
Using smaller plates and measuring out your food more accurately (for foods such as rice and pasta, which can be easy to misjudge portion-wise), will help you prepare only the food you need and cut down on any excess.
• Make use of leftovers
Food which is close to its use-by date, such as older fruit and vegetables, can be used to make such things as smoothies, sauces or soups.
• Batch cook meals
Batch cooking meals and preparing set portions for days in the week can be a huge time saver, reduce waste and help you eat more healthily (by helping you avoid ready meals and junk food that you might feel are quicker options).
By wasting less food, you can waste less money and spend it on other essentials or non-essentials.
