Bedfordshire Flood Preparedness Week - Day 4

Date Added: 25/11/2021

Flooding – your responsibilities

It’s day four of the Bedfordshire Flood Preparedness Week.

Today’s focus is flooding – your responsibilities.

If you own land adjacent to a watercourse or which has a watercourse running through it, you are considered to be a riparian owner and as such you have certain legal responsibilities.

These include maintaining the watercourse and clearing any obstructions (natural or otherwise) to keep it running freely.
Watercourses might take the form of a ditch or stream and may be open above the ground or piped through it. If you are unsure if you are responsible for the maintenance of a watercourse please get in touch.

Since the flooding last Christmas, we have been in touch with landowners reminding them of their responsibility to maintain ditches and watercourses.

You can read our guide to riparian ownership: https://bit.ly/riparianownership.
