Sandy Town Council has no plans to close the wheels/skate boarding equipment remaining at Sunderland Road Recreation Ground. The equipment is managed and maintained by the town council at the tax payers’ expense under a licence agreement with the charity known as the Sandy Skating and Youth Association. The council does not plan to remove the remaining equipment or to use the skate park area for any other purpose. The Sandy Skating and Youth Association has not given notice that it intends to withdraw the equipment it owns and so the current position is that we will maintain present arrangements while both parties look in to funding opportunities for new equipment.
A new skate park could cost around £100,000 it then needs to be insured and maintained. The old equipment was bought with grants from public bodies and fundraising by the Sandy Skating Association. Unfortunately in past years the charity did not make long term plans for the maintenance and replacement of the equipment and it has always struggled to find funds to meet the ongoing costs of the skating area. The Town Council took over insurance and maintenance of the equipment when it was clear that the charity had no funds to do this. The Town Council also paid the costs of specialist inspection and removal of the unsafe equipment when it became clear that the equipment was deteriorating and presenting a risk to users. The charity now has some new trustees and is working hard to raise funds although more volunteers are needed to help with this work.
Some members of the Sandy community have expressed a wish to have a new park and some have said they do not want to see the old equipment replaced at all. Some would prefer to see new equipment in a new location. The Town Council will work with the Sandy Skating and Youth Association and any other bodies which may be able to help replace the equipment or secure additional funding for similar facilities and it is a long term goal of the Council to secure improved facilities for young people in Sandy. But the Town Council is not prepared to bear the whole cost of new skating equipment at this time.
