Send cigarettes packing this summer holidays
Date Added: 27/07/2016
Now that school’s out, parents and carers are being urged to stub the cigarettes out to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand cigarette smoke this summer holidays.
Exposing children to secondhand smoke – the smoke exhaled by a smoker and created by the lit end of a cigarette – is said to be responsible for over 300,000 GP consultations and an estimated 9,500 hospital admissions in the UK each year.
This summer holidays, whether you’ll be enjoying day trips out in the car with the kids or picnics with them in the park, parents and carers are being reminded that this quality time is safest for everyone when it is enjoyed free from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
To help increase understanding of these dangers, parents and carers are encouraged to test their knowledge by completing a ‘Smokefree summer holidays quiz’, which also gives them the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win a family day out at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.
Cllr Maurice Jones, Executive Member for Health at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “No matter how careful someone might think they are by smoking in another room or opening a car window – over 80 per cent of cigarette smoke is invisible so it’s impossible to see or control where it goes.
“The only effective way to protect children from breathing secondhand smoke is to stop smoking around them. That’s why we’re calling on parents and carers to keep the summer break free from cigarette smoke and show children that family time without cigarettes is normal, healthy and fun.”
For residents who need some support with making it a smokefree summer or who want to take a permanent holiday from cigarettes, the Bedfordshire Stop Smoking Service is there to help.
Smokers are four times more likely to quit with the help of the Stop Smoking Service. For free, friendly advice on stopping smoking and to order a free Quit Kit, call 0800 013 0553 and press 1 for Central Bedfordshire.
