Guided Walks - 2014

The first of Sandy Tourist Information Centre’s Guided Walks to be held this year is a guided tour of Sandye Place in Sandy and this will take place on Thursday, 24th April at 7pm On this rare occasion we will be able to tour the interior of this Georgian mansion and its delightful riverside grounds. Sandye Place was one of the manor houses of Sandy and is now part of Sandye Place Academy.
The second Walk is the Everton Walk and this will take place on Saturday, 24th May at 2.30pm. The Walk will go through the Parklands of the 18th century Woodbury Hall, along the Roman Road and parts of the famous Tempsford Airfield, passing the famous Barn, once part of Gibraltar Farm, where SOE agents received their last instructions before boarding an aeroplane for occupied Europe.
The third Guided Walk is another rare opportunity to see the interior of an historic house. This time we will have a Guided Tour of the interior of The Lodge, Sandy, once the home of the Peel and Stewart families and the UK headquaters of the RSPB. We will see the beautiful rooms of this beautiful Tudor style mansion and the Italianate Gardens. This Walk takes place on Thursday, 5th June at 7pm
On Thursday, 10th July, meeting in the village at 7pm there will take place the Tempsford Walk. On this walk in the historic village of Tempsford we will see the site of Gannocks Castle, the medieval parish church, the newly unveiled SOE memorial and much, much more.
The fifth Guided Walk of the year takes place on Sunday, 10th August at 2.30pm. This is a rare opportunity to have a Guided Walk through the beautiful wooded grounds of Southill Park, the ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped park, home of the Whitbread family since 1795. On this walk we will walk by the great regency mansion and the 34 acre lake.
In September there will be two Walks. Firstly there will be the Potton - Sutton Walk which will take place on Friday, 12th September at 2.45pm. This walk is part of the Bedfordshire Walking Festival
Secondly, on Thursday, 18th September there will take place the Willington Guided Walk, meeting in the village at 6.30pm. The walk will be led by the Willington History Group through this historic riverside village, where we will see the famous dovecote and stables and much more.
The Walks throughout the year (other than the Potton-Sutton Walk which is free) will cost £5.50 per person.
