Beware hoax 'accident' calls
Date Added: 25/06/2015
Central Bedfordshire has issued a warning about hoax calls after a number of residents have been contacted by people claiming to be from the council.
The unidentified callers say that they are from the council’s accident investigation department or ringing on behalf of the NHS about a recent accident.
However, when pressed for more information or a contact number they hang up.
The numbers they have been using appear to come from London as they start 0208, but are actually just randomly generated.
Councillor Anthony Brown, Deputy Executive Member for Community Services, said: “Scam callers can often be very convincing and claim to be working on behalf of a well-known and reputable organisation.
“They can be very professional and will often pressure you into acting quickly so that you don’t miss out on money or other rewards.
“They are hoping to lull people into a false sense of security, so remember to be on your guard, don’t give out any personal or financial information, and if you are in any doubt then just hang up.”
To report an unsolicited call email the council’s Trading Standards team on [email protected] or you can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06.
