Beware council tax rebate phone scam
Date Added: 15/10/2015
Residents are warned not to end up out of pocket to telephone fraudsters offering a council tax rebate.
Central Bedfordshire Council has issued the warning after being made aware of rogue callers claiming to represent the ‘council administration department’.
The caller claims that the resident is due to council tax rebate worth thousands of pounds due to their home being placed in a lower council tax band, but that they need to pay an upfront administration fee to progress the rebate.
In reality, were such a rebate due then there would be no administration fee.
Councillor Tony Brown, Deputy Executive Member for Community Services, said: “Telephone con artists can often sound very convincing and make you an offer that seems too good to turn down. In reality, though, if you fall for their scam then it is you will end up out of pocket.
“If you do receive one of these calls then do not give out any personal information or bank details. Instead, take the caller’s contact details and then check whether the person ringing was genuine.”
Anyone who is unsure about a call they have received should ring the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or email [email protected]
